PRESIDENT'S WELCOME
Jeff Hughes
2026-2027 LaMsMATYC President
Welcome to LaMsMATYC, the Louisiana and Mississippi chapter of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. I'm Jeff Hughes, your president this year. I am passionate about teaching and mathematics and honored to serve our organization. This is my second term as president. I previously served in 2011-2012.
What I love most about LaMsMATYC are the friendships I have formed with fellow mathematics educators in Louisiana and Mississippi. The networking opportunities are invaluable, and I truly enjoy learning about the developments in their mathematics departments and the effective strategies they use. This ongoing exchange has contributed greatly to my growth as an educator.
One of my favorite LaMsMATYC memories was serving as Local Events Coordinator for AMATYC’s annual conference in New Orleans in 2015. Working together, our members made the event a great success. The theme, “Jazz It Up,” captured New Orleans' lively spirit and matched the event’s energy.
I retired in the summer of 2025 after serving as the curriculum coordinator of mathematics at Hinds Community College in Raymond, Mississippi. My career at Hinds spanned 37 years. In addition to my primary responsibilities, I served as a Phi Theta Kappa advisor and taught leadership courses through the Honors Program. My academic journey began at Mississippi College, a Christian university, where I earned my bachelor’s degree, followed by a master’s degree from the University of Mississippi. Although I retired, I remain active by working part-time and teaching geometry, Algebra II, and precalculus at a local private school.
My favorite courses to teach are College Algebra, Calculus II, and Differential Equations. I appreciate the diversity of students in college algebra, enjoy the process of teaching integration techniques, and find fulfillment in instructing highly motivated students majoring in mathematics or engineering.
I am also an author with Cengage and have found great joy in writing. College Algebra (13th edition), written together with David Gustafson, was released in 2023.
Join our organization dedicated to advancing mathematics education in Louisiana and Mississippi. Our next conference is at LSU-Eunice on Saturday, March 13, 2027, where educators will connect and share ideas.
