Jeffrey Weaver
2016-2017 LaMsMATYC President

Welcome to the LaMsMATYC website. My name is Jeffrey Weaver and I am the 2016 - 2017 President of LaMsMATYC. I have been a teacher for 29 years and I have taught in the mathematics classroom at the middle school, high school, college, and university. I have been a member of LaMsMATYC since I came to live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana ten years ago and I have been a member of AMATYC for the last thirteen years. I have served on the Executive Council of the Louisiana Association of Teachers of Mathematics and I served as President of LATM for my two-year term. Over my career, I have made over 65 professional presentations at local, state, regional, national, and international conferences for many different professional organizations and schools as well as for the Louisiana Department of Education. I have been a member of NCTM for the past 30 years and I believe in the purpose and added value of professional development.
LaMsMATYC is an organization dedicated to the nurturing and growth of the teacher of the two-year colleges and a place where teachers can share ideas, learn new innovative techniques of quality instruction and share experiences with colleagues that understand the trial and tribulations of teaching in the college system in Louisiana and Mississippi. LaMsMATYC and AMATYC are important and valuable resources to keep the spirit of my teaching refreshed and renewed as I continue to prosper in my career. The comradery and communication with my peers in my college and other colleges is an asset to assist me to provide my students the most “state-of-the-art’ instruction.
Teaching in the two-year college is such an important and integral part of the education of so many young people who might need a more “personal” approach to higher learning than the four-year institutions can provide. We are a “bridge” to offer a greater number of people access to higher education. I am honored to be counted among those that are willing to take on this important role as educators. While the work we do is not always acknowledged by those making policy, we endure and endeavor to make a difference in our society and in our respective states.
If I had a message to leave behind, it would be to say that I would like to challenge every member of LaMsMATYC that reads this to reach out to all of your neighboring two-year colleges and try to bring with you into this organization more people to represent each college in your state. We have many colleges that are not represented by the current membership of our organization and I would love to see a reach out to every two-year institution and get at least two people from every college to join our family and become a part of something even greater than it exists now. Let be stronger together.
On behalf of myself and our executive team, I wish for you a wonderfully successful year. I am looking forward to serving this organization and your efforts in the years to come.
