Welcome to the home page of the Louisiana and Mississippi affiliate of the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges. I am Renee Austin, and I am serving as the president for the 2019 – 2020 year. Currently, I am a mathematics instructor at Hinds Community College, Rankin campus in Pearl, Mississippi. In twenty-two years of teaching mathematics, I have taught everything from 7th grade math to Differential Equations. After graduating from high school, I attended Holmes Community College in Goodman, Mississippi with the intention of majoring in just mathematics. When I started my junior year as a transfer student to Mississippi College, I decided to change my path to math education. I followed in both my dad and grandmother’s footsteps and became a math teacher. Well, here I am twenty–two years later teaching mathematics at a community college.

Along the way, I have had many math instructors that made an impact on my life and challenged me to work to my full potential and to think outside of the box. Those first instructors were those I had at Holmes Community College. It was then I witnessed first-hand all that instructors do so that students like me would be successful in the classroom. We were not all on the same level nor did we all have the same background. Now, as an instructor myself, the diversity in the classroom is the first thing I think about when developing my
classes. Because of organizations such as LaMsMATYC and AMATYC, I have been able to learn new and thought provoking ideas to implement in my classroom. Education is always changing and it becomes extremely challenging to always keep up with the demands of the changing methodologies as well as the technology. Our organization is dedicated to providing worthwhile and applicable sessions to aid in keeping up with those demands.

I want to encourage everyone to become a member and participant in this great organization. Our next annual conference will be held in February 2021 at South Louisiana Community College in Lafayette, LA. I look forward to serving you and this great organization, and I look forward to seeing you at our next conference.
