LaMsMATYC Book Scholarship Recipient 2016 - 2017

Allen Weinberger

Delgado Community College

October 1, 2016

It is an honor to be asked to say a few words about Allen Weinberger, the 2016 LaMsMATYC Book Scholarship recipient.  I think I was asked because next to his mom, Betty Weinberger, I have known Allen the longest.

I first met Allen over 20 years ago at his home when I made a preschool visit.  The first time I saw him, he was up in a tree.  I am not sure if he came down during the short time I was there, but I do not think so.  I enjoyed having Allen in my class.  He was sweet, sensitive, and had a mysterious smile.

More than twenty years later, I volunteered a couple of hours a week in the Math Lab and Allen was working as a tutor.  It was the same Allen that I taught in preschool only a lot taller.  He was still sweet, sensitive, and still had that mysterious smile.  I watched him work with students of all ages in all math courses.  He tutored each person with respect.  When one student understood what he was doing, Allen sauntered over to another to give help.  I was amazed how knowledgeable Allen was in all the math subjects.  Some may say that he is just like his mom, but I know that I taught him all that in preschool!!!

With a great GPA, his extensive knowledge of math, and his willingness to share that knowledge, I think that the scholarship committee made an excellent choice when selecting Allen Weinberger.

2015 Book Scholarship Winners!

In 2015 Pearl River Community College – Forrest County Centered hosted the annual Louisiana-Mississippi Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges (LaMsMATYC) in October 2015. The host campus for the conference is awarded an annual, one-time book scholarship from LaMsMATYC. PRCC-FCC Faculty who are members of LaMsMATYC established the criteria for eligibility for the scholarship. Six students were selected to submit a paragraph extolling why they should be the recipients of the scholarship. From the participants, two students were selected:

Brendan Massey (Hattiesburg) and Justyce Moffett (Purvis).

Each received $150 cash! Congratulations Brendan and Justyce!
